Introduction :
Before a deep-dive into the world of cybersecurity, I would like to dig into the idea of privacy & security. I have already published a similar blog before on Cybersecurity. My purpose in posting these contents, again and again, is just to create curiosity.
What is Security and why it is important?
For any individual like you and me, whether he/She is at the workplace or at home or on a vacation, would you like to be monitored all the time by someone you may or may not know?
Would you accept the fact that somebody else in some other part of the world has access to all your personal data? Which company do you work for, How much salary you draw, How many people in your house, what’s your pet names, What are the passwords of your social media?
Well, I will certainly not like that and will try my best to protect that information from getting leaked. Here comes the idea of Privacy and Security !!
Everyone who is on the internet must be aware of the fact of getting exposed to unknown people. That’s really annoying and embarrassing. Nobody wants to compromise for that.
Our modern-day society will be dysfunctional without the usage of the Internet and technical appliances and gadgets. From Smart Tv to Smartphone, from the usage of Voice recognition helper, Alexa, to the smart camera, laptops, Ipad all devices need the usage of the internet.
Each of these devices has its IP-addresses. Once the hacker gets access to these systems, it can create chaos. Our privacy will be compromised and we need to be more careful about the security of these devices.
These devices can contain some really important personal data, confidential information, personal identification, Bank account details, Information related to our Government or any Industry.
If this information is compromised it can cause serious damage or even mass destruction to a company or the country or to our society.
Recently there are incidents of e.g. Beirut Explosion, which was considered a state-sponsored cyber attack.
So here comes the concept of Cybersecurity.
What is Cyber Security?
Cybersecurity is the process of protecting and recovering our personal information, data, confidential or classified information sitting on any laptop, network device, or IoT device, etc which are connected to the internet, Wifi, Bluetooth, or LAN and having a chance of getting exposed to unauthorized access.
Cyber attacks are getting more and more sophisticated nowadays with the help of Artificial Intelligence.
What is Cybercrime? How it can damage us?
Cybercrime has become a more sophisticated and highly paid field in the world of blackhat hacking with the use of more intelligent devices and efficient programming e.g. Python, PHP, etc. and many more.
Hackers use new technologies to break into Banking Systems, Power grid systems to damage steal money, and important information online or damage the infrastructure.
There are various techniques to do that. Some of them are Social Engineering, Phishing attack, Sniffing, footprinting, Malware attack, a Ransomware attack, DDoS attack, etc. I have discusses them more in detail in my other blog Importance of Cybersecurity in 2020.
Cybercriminals can do the following damages to us
- Economic Loss
- Reputational Loss
- Psychological / Physical Damage
- Regulatory Loss
