Disappointment, and anger against the “three central farm legislation” have been simmering since September 2020. Hundreds of farmers from Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh marched towards the nation’s capital.
Farmers failed to garner support from their respective local governments.
As such, they decided to mount pressure on the Central Government. BJP Governments in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh failed in convincing the farmers.
On the other side, Governments in Punjab and Rajasthan rendered their supporting hands to the agitated farmers.
In the current scenario, farmers want the Union Government to withdraw the legislation or assure an MSP (minimum support price) to their harvests by forming a new law.
Cause of farmer protest in Delhi
Indian farmers didn’t accept the three law legislations. It includes Agreement of Price Assurance, amendment of Essential Commodities and Facilitation and Promotion.
They believe that the legislation will open agricultural domains outside the APMC.
Since the government wouldn’t be able to collect levy or fees outside the Agricultural Produce Market Committee, it would leave the farmers at the mercy of the corporate world.
Farmers know that Dismantling the mandi framework would hinder the procurement of crops at MSP.
Price assurance amendment would protect the farmer community against price exploitation. But, the legislation doesn’t assure a price fixation mechanism.
Farmers want the Union Government to document the MSP the power given to the corporate leaders will get them exploited.
How did the matter escalate?
Farmers in Haryana and Punjab are known for their adamant nature. One month after the three law legislations got enacted, a special session got convened by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
They rejected the legislation and passed three farm amendment bills removing the state from the order.
After Punjab did this, farmers in Haryana sought support from the local government.
Soon they realised that they wouldn’t get help from the government and decided to march towards the capital and thwart pressure on the local government.
BKU President Gurnam Singh Chaduni led the Hariyana farmers and blocked Ambala-Delhi NH for three hours.
Local police cane-charged the farmers and registered several cases against them like “murder attempt”.
It infuriated the protestors, and they called for a “Delhi Chalo” march.
As the sources indicate, all the political parties in Haryana supported the farmers except BJP and its alliance.
Congress and INLED led by the influential party leaders have fully supported the local farmers.
It has already yielded results, and as such Congress won the poll held in Baroda. Despite infusing all the strength, BJP and JJP couldn’t win.
On the contrary, Punjab is a Congress-ruled state and the farmers got support from both the ruling and the opposition parties.
It’s one of the reasons why the farmers kept blocking road and rail networks, as they got complete support from the State Government.
With the farmers trying to enter the capital, the situation turned extremely volatile. Steps taken by the state would imply law disruption. Thus, BJP isn’t able to take action to stop the swelling crowds of farmers.
